It was a a gorgeous week in Charlotte. The weather was perfect-- in the mid 70s with a cool breeze and bright sunshine. We spent many days walking outside with Sam in the stroller. Over the weekend we went to visit na-nah and na-dah in Hilton Head. Na-dah's cousin, Cathy, and her husband, Richard, were visiting the States from England and we wanted to meet the chaps (na-dah's mom is British, hence the English relative). Matt and Molly were in town as well and it was a good time. There was a lot of "do you do this in England?" "Do you do this in America?" On Saturday we were off to Savannah (after a 2 hour delay due to sewer problems) and had lunch at a restaurant called The Olde Pink House. The house is over 200 years old and was a meeting place for the Liberty Boys -- a group of young men that met in order to free colonial America from British rule. Supposedly the house is inhabited by ghosts, but we didn't see the scary creatures. I was worried about maneuvering our big stroller around the dining room, but we ended up in a private room and it was perfect. The food was delicious. Cathy and Richard ordered the fish and chips, and we said, "you travel all the way to America and you order the fish and chips?" Then we walked around the city, checking out the architecture and city squares. It's a cool place and we will definitely go back since it's only 45 minutes from Hilton Head. There are photos from our trip in the October folder. Be sure to check out the blog on October 31st to see Sam in his Halloween costume!!
Next week is Election Day, gulp! We hope everyone is informed (if not, do this great country a favor and stay home) and takes this seriously. Voting for someone based on their appearance or because they pass the "Would I like to have a beer with this person?" test is not what our Founding Fathers had in mind. Below are a few quotes to get you in the mood to study up -- from the Presidential race down to City Council. And remember: in eight short days, campaign season will be over!
"Always vote for principle, though you may vote alone, and you may cherish the sweetest reflection that your vote is never lost."
-John Quincy Adams
"When one thinks of all the men who have put their lives on the line in battle to defend and preserve this country, it is especially painful to think that there are people living in the safety and comfort of civilian life who cannot be bothered to find out the facts about candidates before voting to put the fate of this nation, and of generations yet to come, in the hands of someone chosen because they like his words or style."
-Thomas Sowell
"A vote is like a rifle; its usefulness depends upon the character of the user."
-Theodore Roosevelt
"The purpose of voting, in our country, is to select men and women with the competence and integrity to operate the mechanics of government fixed by our Constitution. For this process to have any public benefit requires that the choices be made on an intelligent, knowledgeable and reasoned basis."
-Charley Reese
"If God had wanted us to vote, he would have given us candidates."
-Jay Leno
