Since our last post Sam has really grown. He crawls everywhere, fast, and over and under everything. He pushes his toy lawnmower as he crawls along- very cute. He can even pull himself up on his knees, which is his favorite activity thus far. For Christmas he got a table that plays music, and he pulls himself up to reach the table, triggers the toy to play the alphabet song and then sways and wiggles to the music. Again, very cute! He uses anything to pull himself on his knees, even if the item isn't sturdy enough to hold his weight. Needless to say he topples over quite a bit and the tears flow, but nothing serious so far. His vocabulary (if you want to call it that) expanded too. He says 'da,da,da.' We try to get him to say 'ma,ma,ma' but he just looks at us, laughs, and says 'da,da,'da.'
Baby celebrated his first Christmas! On Christmas Eve we went to church and Sam enjoyed the opening string duet; however, I had to bounce him on my knee the remainder of the service. With 15 minutes left and the bouncy knee no longer doing the trick, we pumped him full of sweet potato puffs. When that failed Dave stood with him at the back of the church. It was an hour service and I was happy Sam made it as long as he did. When we returned from the service na-nah and na-dah were waiting in our driveway to celebrate the holiday. Na-nah was in charge of cookies, and she did not disappoint! Sam went to bed shortly thereafter, and we sat around talking and eating cookies. We were worried Santa might eat them all, so we made sure to get a good sampling just in case. Then it was Christmas morning! The real fun began. Of course, Sam had no idea that the day was different than any other. We opened a few of his gifts before he was ready for a nap (he was more interested in chewing on the bows). Sienna thought every gift was for her. After his morning nap we tore through the rest of his gifts. Sam got a lot of fun toys and clothes. Then he was ready for yet another nap. I think he was way over-stimulated and needed a rest.
While Sam napped, I cooked the meal. It my first time cooking the turkey and all of the sides. I had everything prepped, it was just a matter of assembling and cooking the dishes. They all needed cooked at the same time and my skills are not to that point; so, everyone was helping in the kitchen-- even na-dah! I used my china for the first time (it's all about presentation) and we enjoyed our Christmas meal. Now that I've used the china and didn't break anything we'll use it more often. The rest of the day was spent relaxing and playing with Sam. We also played a few rounds of the card game "In a Pickle" and had several laughs at na-dah's expense. Dave and I loved not having to travel and na-nah said it was the most relaxing Christmas since before she met na-dah.
The next day we traveled to Greenville, SC to visit Matt and Molly and their cat Sidney. It was another fun day and we enjoyed seeing the tricks of a cat. Sam had another mini Christmas and we had a yummy feast.
New Year's Eve was our most happening yet. We spent the day running a few errands and Dave watched the most boring football bowl game ever featuring Pitt. We bought a take and bake pizza from a local pizza joint and when Sam went to bed we watched the movie, "Gone Baby Gone." It was a good movie but totally depressing. Shamefully, we were in bed way before midnight! We are officially old fogies. New Year's Day we ate our good luck meal of pork and sauerkraut and undecked the halls. God blessed us tremendously in 2008 and we have a lot to look forward to in 2009.
Tomorrow Dave heads back to work for his first full workweek since Thanksgiving. It's going to be rough on all of us.
