There is Joy in Mudville

It's been a cool, wet, muddy week since we reseeded the lawn. It only rained one day, but our sprinklers have been running every day, at dawn and dusk. With all the wet topsoil, with the dog, and with Dave running outside to switch the water flow every 30 minutes, our place is full of mud. But with a last-minute purchase of KMart rubber boots, we've managed to keep most of the dirt outside. The hard work is paying off, and we saw the first sprouts of green pop up on Sunday. The grass appears to be coming in thick and good. Of course, there will be problem areas that will have to be addressed in the spring. But that's just the joy of being a homeowner.

As for our home life, it's been pretty quiet. We're still trying to get Sam on a schedule. He goes to sleep every night on his own, although it's usually preceded by a good 30 minutes of crying. The crying normally starts before we put him down, which is a good sign because it means he's recognizing his bedtime routine. The above picture is Sam waking up and seeing his dad off to work. It looks like Sam is happy and rested, but if I recall correctly, he was up every few hours that night and didn't sleep well. Which unfortunately has been a common theme of late.

In other news, Sam continues to roll all over the place (it's fun to see the strange positions that he sometimes falls asleep in). He's got a good handle on using a half-roll over to get to a particular toy. But he hasn't figured out yet that he can use multiple rolls to travel across a room.

Early odds are that Sam's first word will be "o.k.". Not sure if that's technically a word, but that's the kind of sound he makes most often. He's got about six months to come up with something better.

There are a couple new pictures in the September 2008 folder. And yes, this will be the last blog (for a while) where we write about watching our grass grow.

Sam is more adorable everyday. (Those eyes...wow!) And it sounds like he is doing really well with his new bedtime routine, too. Good luck! (By the way, Owen's first word was "vrrrooooom".)
